Rollover collision at 14th and College causes injuries, blocks traffic

(Update, 6pm: KIRO has a video report on the incident.)

Thanks to readers @n_e_x_u_s and @toddnelmes who tweeted last night about an ugly collision on North Beacon Hill, and included photos of the mess:

@n_e_x_u_s followed up a bit later: “Minor injuries. Driver fled. Passenger kept @ scene for EMT. 1 lane opened. #36 NB allowed through. SB still waiting.”

  1. I am surprised there aren’t more horrible collisions at this really dangerous intersection. Adding speed on 14th makes the left turn from W-bound College potentially fatal.

  2. Yeah, it’s a bit treacherous when you’re trying to make a left turn off College onto 14th, since the parked cars obstruct your view and you gotta pull way out into the lane to see. To make matters worse, if you’re on 14th going straight thru the intersection of 14th & Beacon (by the 76 station), the cars from Beacon that merge into your lane don’t yield to you, potentially causing an accident. They really need to fix that!

  3. Actually, I think the northbound Beacon Ave traffic turning onto 14th is the main line with the ROW, with the 14th traffic passing through the 4 way stop needing to yield. There used to be signs indicating this, but the fact that it is vague is the problem, and I always slow way down going through there. This will be resolved when the intersection is improved as part of the neighborhood greenway project, but I don’t know the timeline.

Regardless, the fact that the driver was going fast enough to lose control, flip the car, and cause so much damage suggests that bad infrastructure wasn’t the problem, just bad driving. Thankfully this happened in the middle of the night and not while kids are walking to and from school.

  4. Sadly there was a second alcohol related accident a few blocks north on 14th Avenue last night. Thankfully there were no apparent injuries.

  5. “….the fact that the driver was going fast enough to lose control, flip the car, and cause so much damage suggests that bad infrastructure wasn’t the problem, just bad driving….”

True enough, but I do wonder (applying drunk logic here) if part of the reason the person was speeding is because they knew there were no lights. Even an impaired person might notice if there were two sets of lights ahead (one at College and one at Beacon)
