Beacon Reservoir Gatehouse to be mothballed

Seattle Public Utilities released the statement below on the landmark-nominated Beacon Reservoir Gatehouse at Jefferson Park.

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has determined, through rigorous business case analysis, that the most cost-effective solution for the Beacon Hill Reservoir Gatehouse is to mothball the building and perform routine maintenance as required in its mothballed condition.

The mothballing approach preserves the opportunity for making future improvements to the gatehouse. It mainly consists of safe removal of dangerous lead-containing coating on the exterior walls and applying a new application of aesthetic paints around the gatehouse.

SPU will review the gatehouse mothball status as part of its routine three-year maintenance planning cycle.

Mothballing tasks will begin in early 2011, in coordination with the Parks Department Jefferson Park project team.

Sound Transit purchasing property affected by voids

Sound Transit is spending nearly $500,000 to purchase a home on the brink of one of the notorious “voids.” BHB news partner The Seattle Times has the story:

Christine Miller-Panganiban discovered a 21-foot-deep hole in her yard, at 2605 18th Ave. S., in March 2009. She and her husband, Rommel Panganiban, will receive $400,000 for the house, $11,350 for giving work crews access to the property and $65,000 compensation for stress.

Sound Transit will be seeking to recover expenses such as this from tunnel contractor Obayashi Corporation. Read more in The Times.

Shooting at 14th and Hinds

Details from news partner The Seattle Times:

Medics responded Tuesday afternoon to a South Seattle address where a man was shot to death, said Seattle Fire Department spokeswoman Dana VanderHowen. The victim was reportedly shot outside when he was shot by a woman who left in a car.

Homicide detectives were responding to the address in the area of 14th Avenue South and South Hinds Street, said Seattle police spokesman Mark Jamieson. The shooting was reported at 2:52 p.m., VanderHowen said.

Later updated to:

A 38-year-old man was shot to death in South Seattle Tuesday afternoon. Police believe the shooter may be the man’s girlfriend.

Witnesses told police that they heard gunshots and then saw a man on the road. A woman was seen kneeling over the man before she jumped into the passenger seat of a waiting car, described as a dark-colored Honda or Toyota.

The car was last seen headed west on South Spokane Street toward Interstate 5.

The Times later added that the woman suspected of the shooting then shot herself in Tukwila, while alone in a car. Police say that she has been taken to Harborview with life-threatening injuries.

KIRO has more information here. KOMO has some information as well, including the suspect’s name, in the video. (A correction, though — 14th and Hinds is not “near ‘The Jungle.'”)

SeattlePI.com comments that this is the eighth homicide in Seattle this year, and the first since June 6. They’ve also posted video of the police briefing at YouTube:

Meet Broadstripe with UPTUN this Thursday

Seattle Broadstripe customers, many of whom are on Beacon Hill, are encouraged to attend the second quarterly meeting between Broadstripe, the City of Seattle Department of Technology, and volunteer community group Upping Technology for Underserved Neighbors (UPTUN) this Thursday, June 24th, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the Bank of America Conference Room at Promenade Plaza, 23rd and Jackson.

UPTUN contends that Broadstripe services for customers in their franchise area are priced higher and are of lower quality than those offered by their competitors servicing other neighborhoods. (We imagine this is an opinion held by many neighbors.) UPTUN also describes a few less-direct effects that poor cable and broadband service has on a neighborhood: Tenants don’t want to lease and condo buyers don’t want to purchase when they find out they must use Broadstripe, negatively affecting vacancy rates; telecommuters and home businesses cannot count on Broadstripe to do their work; substandard services provided by the city and Broadstripe reinforce perceptions and stereotypes that the afflicted neighborhoods are of lesser value than others; and poor service through Broadstripe not only discourages families from moving in, but also provides an incentive to leave the neighborhood.

UPTUN’s quarterly meetings are held to ensure the improvements promised in the 2010 Work Plan are completed, and completed on-schedule.

Crime notes: Flashings continue on North Beacon Hill

There have been more recent sightings of the serial masturbator/flasher in the North Beacon Hill area — at least eight reported incidents so far, we’re told. He appears to still be driving the newer-looking navy blue [Chevy?] truck with tinted windows as previously described, and is obscuring the license plate in an attempt to elude identification. If you spot a truck matching this description, especially if you notice the license plate is hidden, please consider notifying 911.

Aaron G. was robbed Sunday night. He wrote in with this account and asked us to share it:

I was on my way home from the Valero store around 11:30 pm on Sunday night when two guys approached me from behind. They asked for my bags repeatedly before shoving me and demanding that I give it to them. Once handing it over, they started screaming at me, asking what else I had on me. They reached into my jacket pocket, grabbed my cigarettes, took my wallet from my back pocket, and ran off as a car approached. I chased them down to the Shell station where they jumped into a car waiting with a few other guys in it and they peeled off.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT! This happened near 15th and College. They were young, maybe 18 or 19 years old, black men, Ethiopian accents. Hooded sweatshirts, and they seemed nervous.

Try your hand at lawn bowling this Saturday

Lawn bowling or “bowls” is a game originating in the 13th century, distantly related to bocce, providing competition and a test of skill for everyone from teens to seniors.

This Saturday, the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club and numerous other clubs across the country are having open houses and inviting people to come learn more about the game. An introductory lesson is free — bring friends! (And to keep the playing surface in good repair, please remember to wear flat-soled shoes.)

Stop in and give it a shot this Saturday, May 8, from noon to 4:00 pm at the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club, 4103 Beacon Ave S, just west of the driving range.

Thanks to Nita Chambers from the club for the photos and notice.
