Cleveland students create mural

Correction:The original post had the correct date, but incorrect day.

The Rainier Valley Post reports that Cleveland High School students are currently involved in a project to design and create a 9 x 31 foot mural for the school’s entryway, with help from SEED’s Public Art Program and Urban Artworks. You can see the mural and celebrate the achievement at a community celebration of the completed work on Saturday Thursday, November 20, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm at Cleveland. More information, including photos, at the Rainier Valley Post.

Community forum on breaking down housing barriers

“Breaking Down Housing Barriers” is a two part anti-racism community forum to be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at 6:00 to 9:00 pm, and on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

The first part is an education and awareness panel and discussion, which will “focus on issues that prevent people from finding housing including mortgage default, eviction records and criminal histories… (and) also discuss the underlying role racism plays and how it affects people of color trying to secure stable housing in Seattle/King County.”

The second part is an advocacy and action panel, which will “focus on actions community members can take to help make stable housing more accessible to communities of color.”

Both sessions will be at the Eritrean Community Center, at the foot of Beacon Hill and just off Rainier Avenue at 1954 South Massachusetts.

We mentioned this before, but it’s worth repeating.

The event will be at the New Holly Gathering Hall, 7054 32nd Avenue South, at 12:00 noon, and snacks and child care will be provided.

Free acupuncture for veterans, 11/11

Local acupuncturists, in conjunction with Acupuncturists Without Borders, are planning a permanent acupuncture clinic for veterans. To kick off the project, they are hosting a free clinic on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 6:00 pm, at El Centro de la Raza (2524 16th Avenue South).

Here’s the announcement from AWB:

Acupuncturists Without Borders (AWB) is implementing a nationwide program to provide free acupuncture to returning Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. Groups around the country are forming to create a nationwide network of free community acupuncture clinics for veterans and their families. Seattle area acupuncturists are in the planning of stages of forming a weekly clinic focused exclusively on serving Veterans, and will host their inaugural event in the El Centro de la Raza community center on Beacon Hill on November 11 at 6:00 p.m. …

Donations and sponsorships to this event will be split 50-50, with half of the proceeds going to support AWB’s national efforts, and half going to support the formation of the Seattle Veterans’ Acupuncture Clinic. Tax exempt contributions can be made to Acupuncturists Without Borders, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Veterans and their immediate families can reserve a place at this event by making an online appointment at http://www.communichi.org/ or by calling 206-860-5009.

Thanks to Lara, who posted this to the Beacon Hill mailing list!

Kids’ activity Saturday at the Georgetown Morgue

Sorry for the short notice, but right now Saturday at the Georgetown Morgue (soon to be the site of this year’s KUBE Haunted House), 5000 E. Marginal Way South, there’s a “scare-free” event for kids, with pumpkin decorating, costume contests, and so-on. It’s scheduled to run until 3:00 pm, so you still have time to get down there. It’s scheduled from 1:00 to 3:00 pm.

Afterward, there’s always the Haunted House itself, which opens that evening. But that one won’t be scare-free. (They suggest it for ages 12 and up.) It won’t exactly be cheap, either; tickets are $10–$25.

I don’t suppose anyone knows of any haunted houses up here on Beacon Hill — or perhaps in the Valley or Columbia City? If you do, fill us in on the details, please!

Thanks, Seattle Weekly— but next time, why not put the date of the actual event on the web page, instead of the publish date?
