Snow, seen through your neighbors’ eyes

I know we’ve been a little photo-heavy today, but it’s not every day — or even every year — that we get snow. Here are a few pictures by your neighbors, as posted to the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr. (If you have any interesting photos, please add them!)

One year ago today: snowfall on Beacon Avenue

Perhaps this picture of a snowy Beacon Avenue will get you in the holiday spirit. This was taken last December 1, when we had a lovely dusting of snow that promptly melted. This year, temperatures are running about ten degrees above normal, so we aren’t likely to get any snow for a while. It never hurts to have those tire chains ready to go, though. Eventually it will get colder.

Evolution of a new, improved Jefferson Park

Willie Weir writes to the beaconhill list:

Hey neighbors,

I have periodically taken photos of the work on the reservoir in Jefferson Park. I’ve lived here long enough to remember the space surrounded by barbed wire. I know there are people on this list who still haven’t seen the view from this vantage point. On a clear day this winter, walk past the community and up toward the lawn bowling club. You won’t be disappointed!

Willie recommends that you choose the high-definition and full-screen options to view it in its full detail:

There are also a couple of photos of the area from a year or so ago in the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr.

Thanks for the awesome photos and video, Willie!

A Beacon Hill autumn in pictures

We’ve seen a lot of great photos of Beacon Hill lately. Here are some interesting autumnal views of the Hill. (Most of these, but not all, are from the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr, which welcomes your Beacon Hill photos!)

Viewing Seattle from Beacon Hill, then and now

It’s interesting that, when searching for pictures of “Beacon Hill, Seattle” online, you get a ton of pictures of the downtown skyline, from Dr. Jose Rizal Park. Frequently, our neighborhood gets defined by what it’s close to, rather than what it is. But we have to admit that the view from Rizal Park is pretty darned awesome. The view has changed over the years, of course. Here’s the view from the park, in 1986:

And here’s the same view, from late last month:

Back in 1986 Downtown Seattle seemed pretty built-up to me (and probably to the folks who supported the CAP growth limitation ordinance), but in comparison to the modern pic, it looks like Podunk-ville.

(The new picture is from the Beacon Hill Blog Flickr photo pool. There are quite a few great pics in there — why not add yours?)
