On Saturday, September 10 from 1-4 p.m. there will be a public picnic at the South Precinct of the Seattle Police Department. This is an opportunity to meet the officers, enjoy food and music, and see some of the equipment used by the police. The South Precinct is located at 3001 South Myrtle Street on South Beacon Hill. The picnic is sponsored by the Seattle Police Foundation.

Beacon bits: jazz, magic, and a police picnic
The Denise Louie Education Center on Beacon Avenue South is holding a Jazz Night fundraiser this Saturday, September 12, 6:00 pm, at Showbox SoDo (1700 First Avenue South). The event will feature a silent auction, a live auction, dinner, and dancing.
You can purchase tickets online for $75/person, but there are other ways you can contribute if you can’t attend the show. Volunteers are needed on the day of the event between 10:30am-11pm, and items are needed to be donated for the silent/live auctions. The last day to donate is Wednesday, September 9. Please contact Frances Lin, Community Outreach/Enrollment Manager, at (206) 725-9740 x102 if you can volunteer.
The Denise Louie Education Center is a Head Start center that serves over 200 at-risk families and children (ranging from 3-5 years old). The Jazz Night fundraising event allows them to provide additional services that the government does not fund, such as Play and Learn Groups (serving 0-5 years old), school supplies, and field trips.

Magic Madness is coming to the Jefferson Community Center on September 18 at 6:30 pm! Magician Aaron Wheeler will be there to perform tricks, stunts, and mayhem in a fun family event. The show is open to all ages, for $3 pre-registered or $5 at the door.

You’ll have a chance to tour the precinct station, meet your local police officers, and learn about specialty units such as SWAT, mounted, and K-9. Captain Liggins on recent burglary arrests, more break-in activity
“Thanks to timely phone calls, we’ve been able to make significant headway,” performing an arrest during a burglary in progress, and then getting them to roll over on their associates, leading to the recovery of 300 laptop computers and other electronics.
He also said that the police have been “fortunate lately… to get significant hits on fingerprint evidence… placing people inside the houses…” and “also fortunate… our numbers are increasing… almost at 100 (officers, up from 70)”. They are trying to get their staffing up throughout the department to match workload and “get most officers out on the days and times when most activity occurs.”
Unfortunately, the impact of that well-timed arrest, the leads coming from it, and the accumulation of fingerprint evidence has not fully quelled the rash of break-ins and burglaries nearby.
Kevin on the mailing list wrote about a break-in yesterday, 7/13, at his home near 21st & McClellan. Alma responded with a note about the theft of garden tools and such the same day, 7/13, from her neighbor’s new shed near 15th & Nevada. Suzanne wrote to us about her home being burglarized last Wednesday, 7/8, at 18th & Bayview.
Keep your eyes open and don’t hesitate to call 911 if you see something suspicious.
Update: a number of additional burglary calls today on the scanner, reported by BHNW: 18th & Lucile, 3700 block of Holly Park Drive, 5100 block of 20th Ave S, and the “6500 block” of 19th Ave S (I suspect that’s a typo).

South Precinct crime trends report released
The top-line summary:
…there has been an overall increase in Major Crimes in South Precinct for the first four months of 2009, when compared with the same period in 2008. Robberies and aggravated assaults in South are both up through April in 2009, when compared with 2008, resulting in an overall increase in Violent Crimes.
Among Property Crimes, larceny/thefts have increased from the same period a year ago. Burglaries and vehicle thefts, on the other hand, are at the same level in 2009 through April as they were in 2008 in South Precinct.
…despite increases in specific crimes, the trend line for crime in South Precinct is downward, with total Major Crimes declining each month in 2009 compared to the previous month and falling below the monthly April total from 2008. This is a different pattern from that seen in 2008, when Major Crimes increased in each of the first four months of the year.
