NEPO 5K Don’t Run brings art, music, and food to the Hill

Summer vacation may be ending, but art happenings on and around Beacon Hill are still in full swing. This Saturday, September 10, the NEPO 5K Don’t Run will bring participants on a 5K walk from Occidental Park in Pioneer Square up to the NEPO House on North Beacon Hill (1723 S. Lander St.). Along the way, over 80 artists will present site-specific installations, performances, art gallery events, and more, finishing at NEPO House, which will have its own art show.

Other venues on the hill are also participating. The Station coffee house is hosting a Festival Street car show, with live music, food, drinks and more, on Roberto Maestas Festival Street next to Beacon Hill Station. ROCKiT space is hosting cabaret, food, and drinks at the Garden House (2336 15th Ave. S.). And at 17th Ave. S. and S. McClellan Street, you’ll find a German Garden, including refreshments, dirndls, lederhosen, and a Bavarian Village Band playing polka tunes.

The NEPO 5K Don’t Run is free to the public and welcomes participants of all ages to walk, hop, crawl, stumble, moonwalk, or otherwise make their way along the 5K route. Participants will gather at Occidental Park at 2 p.m., then follow the route through Pioneer Square and the International District to Beacon Hill. Most Beacon Hill events will take place from 6-10 p.m.

Save the dates: Beacon Blues & BBQ 8/26, Beacon Rocks 8/28

The last weekend in August will be a musical one on Beacon Hill!

First, on Friday, August 26, the Beacon Blues & BBQ will bring blues music by the Smokin’ J’s to the Garden House, along with BBQ, beer, and wine available for sale. The show is at 7:30 p.m., and general admission is $10. ROCKiT space members and kids under 12 get in free. Dinner starts at 6:30 p.m., and is $12 (including a beverage). Dinner and the show together are $22. Guests can come for either or both. The Garden House is located at 2336 15th Ave. S.

Then on Sunday, August 28, the final Beacon Rocks! music event of 2011 comes to Roberto Maestas Festival Street (S. Lander St., just north of Beacon Hill Station) from 1-5 p.m. Along with the usual great musical performances, this event will include the ceremony to rename Lander Festival Street as Roberto Maestas Festival Street. Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, representatives from El Centro de la Raza, and other dignitaries will attend, and new memorial street signs will be unveiled during the ceremony. The event will also feature bubbles for the kids and a beach ball volley contest with prizes.

ROCKiT space will be hosting a clothing drive, so bring new or gently used clothing to donate to Wellspring Family Services.

Rizal Park Music and Arts Fest this Sunday

The 3rd Annual Rizal Park Music and Arts Fest is happening this Sunday, August 21, from noon until 8 p.m. at Dr. Jose Rizal Park on North Beacon Hill. The event will feature local Filipino and Pacific Asian musicians and artists, along with Pacific Islands cuisine from vendors such as Beacon Hill’s own Inay’s. Activities for kids are also planned.

ROCKiT space cancels some events, adds others

ROCKiTspace has made some changes to the event schedule for the next couple of months.

The Open Mic events on the first and third Saturdays have been cancelled, and there will be no Folk Night in August. The Folk Night concerts will resume on September 27.

Three events have been added to the schedule:

  • Beacon Blues and BBQ: 7:30 p.m., Friday, August 26 at the Garden House, 2336 15th Ave. S. Smokin’ Js will play acoustic blues. Barbecue, beer, and wine will available for sale starting at 6:30.
  • NEPO 5K Hilltop Celebration, Saturday, September 10, with live entertainment from 6-10 p.m. Stay tuned for further information.
  • Beacon Harvest Carnival, Saturday, October 8th. An all day free community event sponsored by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, with cider pressing, food, music, and more. Stay tuned for the hours and the list of performers.

Beacon Rocks! brings beach to Beacon Sunday

The Beacon Rocks! concert series returns on Sunday, July 31 from 1-5 p.m., along with an interactive art installation that will “bring the beach” to Roberto Maestas Festival Street.

Performance schedule:

Other activities promised from 1-5 p.m. include “ducky kid fun,” a beer garden at the nearby Station coffee shop, food vendors, the interactive art installation, and a viewing of Patrick Gofre and Marga Houtman’s Duckumentary. At 5 p.m. there will also be drawings for prizes.

As always, the event is at Roberto Maestas (Lander) Festival Street, adjacent to Beacon Hill Station.

Piñata Party Saturday promises music, food, fun

Music, food, piñatas, and other neighborly fun activities are coming to Stevens Place Park on Beacon Avenue this Saturday for the annual Beacon Hill Piñata Party. The party is free, and all neighbors are invited.

Performers at the event will include Suntonio Bandanaz, La Banda Gazona, and Lushy. There will also be a community potluck, and, of course, piñatas for the kids.

The party is Saturday, July 16, from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Stevens Place Park (often called Triangle Park), located on Beacon Ave. S. between S. Forest St. and S. Stevens St.

This Sunday we had not one, but two musical events on North Beacon Hill: the summer’s first Beacon Rocks!, followed by The Station’s First Anniversary party. Here are a few photos of those events from the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr.

I’d like to give very special thanks to Dan Bennett for posting a bunch of great photos of the Station event, which the BHB was unable to attend. There are many more photos in the pool; please check them out!

The Station celebrates 1st Anniversary

The Station coffee house on 16th Ave. S. is celebrating its first year in business with a free all-ages anniversary party, on Sunday evening (after Beacon Rocks!) from 5 p.m. until dusk. The party will feature DJ 100 Proof, WD4D, King Khazm and 206 Zulu, Hollis, Amalala, Side Pony, Khingz, Waves of the Mind, and more, including an open mic. There will be be a variety of alcoholic beverages for those 21+, and lemonade, Italian sodas, and coffee drinks for those younger.

The Station is located at 2533 16th Ave. S., just north of Beacon Hill Station, and across the street from El Centro de la Raza.

Beacon Rocks! schedule announced

The performance schedule has been announced for this year’s first Beacon Rocks! concert event, next Sunday, June 26 from 1-5 p.m. at the Roberto Maestas Festival Street (formerly S. Lander St.) next to Beacon Hill Station.

Along with performances from Beacon Hill musicians and artists, The Station coffee house will be hosting a beer garden and food vending on the adjacent El Centro de la Raza grounds. After Beacon Rocks! is The Station’s First Anniversary Party, featuring more local hip hop and rock music from 5pm until dusk.

Chairs and/or blankets are recommended to sit on. Remember that the Festival Street is a paved site.
