Walk for health and quake relief on 8/27

Mark your calendar for Saturday, August 27 at 9 a.m., when the Jun Hong Kung Fu and Sports Association hosts the Second Annual Beacon Avenue Health Walk. The event, a three mile round-trip walk, is a benefit for Japan earthquake relief.

The walk will begin at Jun Hong Kung Fu (4878 Beacon Ave. S.), and then take the Beacon Avenue walking path south to Van Asselt Community Center (2820 S. Myrtle St.) for a water stop, and back to Jun Hong Kung Fu. The total distance is approximately three miles, and the event should finish at noon.

Teams are welcome. Registration is $10 for adults (t-shirt included) and $5 for kids. Deadline to register is August 25. For more information, call 206-793-1825.

Tour the neighborhood on your bike Saturday

Beacon B.I.K.E.S. is hosting a neighborhood bicycle ride this Saturday along portions of the future Beacon Hill Greenway. The ride will be a safe, slow-paced 5-mile loop (see the route in the map below) with few hills, suitable for riders of all ages, and will feature destinations such as Jefferson Park, local businesses, and two community farms (Alley Cat Acres and the future site of the Beacon Food Forest).

The ride will start at 2 p.m. at The Station coffee house, 2533 16th Ave. S. and finish at 4 p.m. at the Beacon Hill Library, 2821 Beacon Ave. S.

ROCKiT space cancels some events, adds others

ROCKiTspace has made some changes to the event schedule for the next couple of months.

The Open Mic events on the first and third Saturdays have been cancelled, and there will be no Folk Night in August. The Folk Night concerts will resume on September 27.

Three events have been added to the schedule:

  • Beacon Blues and BBQ: 7:30 p.m., Friday, August 26 at the Garden House, 2336 15th Ave. S. Smokin’ Js will play acoustic blues. Barbecue, beer, and wine will available for sale starting at 6:30.
  • NEPO 5K Hilltop Celebration, Saturday, September 10, with live entertainment from 6-10 p.m. Stay tuned for further information.
  • Beacon Harvest Carnival, Saturday, October 8th. An all day free community event sponsored by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods, with cider pressing, food, music, and more. Stay tuned for the hours and the list of performers.

Lawn Bowling Club commended as Championship approaches

Washington State Representative Sharon Tomiko Santos (D-37) has offered a resolution commending and honoring the Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club, recognizing August 2011 as Lawn Bowling Month, and welcoming this month’s United States Lawn Bowling Championship to Beacon Hill and Seattle. You can read the resolution here.

Mayor McGinn and the City Council have also issued a similar proclamation, and King County Executive Dow Constantine has proclaimed August 24-29 as Lawn Bowling Week in King County.

The U.S. National Championship will take place at Jefferson Park Lawn Bowling Club on August 23-28. Volunteers are wanted, and spectators are welcome. Here is the schedule of events.

Night Out events coming to Beacon Hill on Tuesday

Tuesday, August 2 is the annual Seattle Night Out, in which neighbors all over Seattle hold block parties to meet each other and organize their neighborhoods to fight crime.

Throughout Beacon Hill there will be numerous Night Out events during the evening hours. Here are all the ones we know about here at the BHB:

  • 1700 block of 17th Ave. S., 7-10 p.m.: Leslie Schear is organizing, and asks that people bring card tables for food and lawn chairs to sit on.
  • 16th Ave. S. and S. Hill St. in the cul de sac with the basketball hoop, 5:30-8 p.m.
  • Van Asselt Community Center, 2820 S. Myrtle, 5-8 p.m.: Meet your neighbors and enjoy free hamburgers, hot dogs and beverages. The wading pool will be open for everyone to enjoy, and there will be arts and crafts and a bounce house for the kids. Adult and teen volunteers are needed to help.
  • 4800 block of Columbia Dr. S.
  • 24th Ave S. and S. Hinds.
  • 20th Ave S. and S. Bayview.
  • 16th Ave. S. at S. Horton, 6-9:30 p.m.: Bring a potluck dish to share. Marching Band Movitas may perform.
  • S. Forest St. between 20th Ave. S. and 21st Ave. S. (3 blocks east of the library), 6:30-10:30 p.m.: If you’d like to help set up, please come at 6pm. Please bring a dish to share. Email Sara Stubbs at sara.mcdonald@gmail.com if you have any questions.
  • 3300 block of 17th Ave. S.: Laura Feinstein is organizing. Bring a dish to the potluck.

Beacon Rocks! brings beach to Beacon Sunday

The Beacon Rocks! concert series returns on Sunday, July 31 from 1-5 p.m., along with an interactive art installation that will “bring the beach” to Roberto Maestas Festival Street.

Performance schedule:

Other activities promised from 1-5 p.m. include “ducky kid fun,” a beer garden at the nearby Station coffee shop, food vendors, the interactive art installation, and a viewing of Patrick Gofre and Marga Houtman’s Duckumentary. At 5 p.m. there will also be drawings for prizes.

As always, the event is at Roberto Maestas (Lander) Festival Street, adjacent to Beacon Hill Station.

Taste of Van Asselt brings food, fun to South Beacon

Van Asselt Community Center hosts the first Taste of Van Asselt on Saturday, July 23, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The family-friendly event will include food, entertainment, kids’ activities, and the opportunity to meet old and new neighbors and friends.

The community center is located at 2820 S. Myrtle St. For more information about the event, call 206-386-1921.

Piñata Party happening this Saturday

The Piñata Party that was rained out last weekend is rescheduled for this Saturday (July 23) from 3- 6 p.m.

Tamara Dyer writes,

There will be piñatas, live music, food, and a watermelon seed spitting contest for kids. We could use some volunteers… can you or your fabulous teenager help out before, during, or after the party? If so, please email.

The party is at Stevens Place Park (often called Triangle Park) on Beacon Avenue between Stevens and Forest. Everyone is welcome!
