Building Credit presentation at Cleveland HS, 10/30

The Cleveland High School Eagles PTSA is sponsoring financial classes (open to anyone in South Seattle) and parent conversation groups (open to anyone with children). All classes are free.

The next class is Tuesday, October 30, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Cleveland High School lunchroom, 5511 15th Ave. S. The presentation, “Building Credit,” is taught by staff from Boeing Employee Credit Union, and will help attendees understand credit reports and what can and can’t be done to correct errors on a credit report.

The PTSA is also looking for volunteers to lead groups of speakers of Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, Tagalog, and Somali. Volunteers should also be reasonably fluent in English. The first classes will be in English only, but in the future, the plan is to train translaters in the course material so they can lead classes in these languages.

If you would like to volunteer, or just have questions, please contact Angela Mealing at eaglesmama@ymail.com.

Take flight at Maple Elementary fundraising auction

The Maple Elementary School PTSA is holding a fundraising auction on Saturday, May 12 from 6-9 p.m. at Jefferson Community Center, 3801 Beacon Ave. S. The event’s theme is “Take Flight,” and the goal is “to help our school to soar into excellence and maintain its reputation as one of the best elementary schools in Seattle.” The auction will raise funds to help support programs including after-school programs, creative teacher grants, classroom supplies, and the annual 3-day trip to Camp Seymour for 4th and 5th grade students. Community members can help in several ways: attending and buying, contributing items to be sold, or by becoming an event sponsor.

Attending: Advance tickets are $25 and you can buy them online. Tickets will be $35 at the door. Advance tickets will also be sold after school at Maple starting on April 23.

Contributing: Vendors, artists, and others are needed who can contribute gift certificates, unique experiences, or items to be sold. Donated items will be acknowledged in the auction catalog and on the PTSA’s website and Facebook page. The PTSA is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization so donations are tax-deductible.

Sponsoring: Become an event sponsor with a cash donation of $1,000, $500, $250 or $100. Donations are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged at the auction, on the websites, and at the school.

For more information, email Maple PTSA Co-President Jen Moore, jenmoore1969@gmail.com or Auction Chair Erin Brannan, ehbrannan@aol.com.

Kimball PTSA receives $60,000 grant

$60,000 from the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods’ Large Project fund was awarded to the Kimball Elementary PTSA “to create a global learning community by fostering inclusion and support, leadership development, and providing programs and classes for parents.”

The awarded funds will be matched by a portion of an additional $1.9 million in community matching (cash, volunteer labor, donated professional services, and donated materials).

Some program background from the news release:

The Department of Neighborhoods’ Large Projects Fund annually provides cash awards of up to $100,000 to neighborhood organizations committed to building a better community. The funding is matched by locally raised money, donated materials, and volunteer labor. The 2009 awards range from $28,000 to $100,000 and communities have pledged to match the city’s $1.3 million contribution with resources valued at nearly $1.9 million.

. . .

Since the program was created 21 years ago, the Neighborhood Matching Fund has awarded over $42 million with a community match of more than $64 million. Projects have involved nearly 65,000 volunteers who have donated over 400,000 work hours.

Thanks, CHS!
