Community invited to discuss Jefferson Park skateable art

Soon there could be an additional place to skate at Jefferson Park besides this skate park. Photo by Wendi Dunlap.
All are invited to a public meeting on Monday, July 15, from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Jefferson Community Center to discuss a proposed skateable art installation at Jefferson Park. The meeting is intended to brief the neighborhood on the history of the project and get feedback on the current work and proposed locations in the park. Artist CJ Rench will be there to discuss his thoughts on the project.

Red Bull recently approached Seattle Parks and Recreation with a proposal to, according to Seattle Parks, “invest in the community by commissioning an artist to design and fabricate a unique skateable art piece.” Originally, the proposed location was at Myrtle Edwards Park on the Seattle waterfront, but after a recent public meeting and other comments, Parks decided to look into other possible locations for the skateable art. Jefferson Park is well suited for the project because it is large, well-used, has parking available, and has a beautiful view of the city.

Three potential sites at Jefferson Park will be discussed at the July 15 meeting. According to Seattle Parks, the project is the first of its kind permanent art installation for skateboarding. For more information, see the website or contact Pamela Kliment of Seattle Parks and Recreation, 206.684.7556, or pamela.kliment@seattle.gov.

Jefferson Community Center is located at 3801 Beacon Ave. S.

Rep. Pettigrew hosts telephone town hall 6/26

Rep. Eric Pettigrew.
Rep. Eric Pettigrew.
Beacon Hill residents in the 37th Legislative District will have a chance to talk live with their state representative, Eric Pettigrew (D), in a telephone town hall this Wednesday, June 26, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Here’s how it works: On Wednesday evening just before 6, thousands of 37th District constituents will receive robo-calls to their homes. By pressing *3 on the phones, residents can ask questions for Representative Pettigrew to answer live, or if they prefer, they can simply listen to the conversation.

If you do not receive a call, you can participate by dialing 877-229-8493 and entering the ID code 18646#.

A Beacon B.I.K.E.S. meeting is coming up next week. Here’s the info from co-chairs Ryan and Christine:

Beacon Hill and Friends –

Summer is fast approaching and Greenway completion is hot on its heels. If you think it ends there, allow us to prove your thoughts incomplete! Because it’s time to celebrate, take a peek into the future of how we move around Beacon Hill and get to the soul of the transportation picture up here. These aren’t pipe dreams; this is what draws us out to meet friends on the street, get to where we want to go, and invites us to go further with active transportation. It’s simply better living.

Join us at the Beacon Hill Library Resource Center from 6-7:45pm on Thursday, June 27th to discuss:

  • Greenway updates and improvements
  • BeHi walking plan update ideas
  • Beacon Rocks! (July 28th concert is transportation-themed)
  • (PARK)ing Day
  • El Centro Plaza Maestas walk and bikeability audit

As always, we promise light refreshments and good company. We can only make this happen together, Beacon Hill, so we look forward to seeing you on the 27th!

Seattle Parks meeting tonight at Jefferson Community Center

Sorry for the late notice — we’ve been dealing with some technical issues earlier today, and after receiving this announcement this afternoon, weren’t able to post this until now. There is a meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at Jefferson Community Center (3801 Beacon Ave. S.) on Environmental Programs, Open Space and Maintenance in Seattle Parks.

Here’s the announcement:

Dear Jefferson Park neighbor,

Seattle Parks and Recreation is hosting their fourth Parks Legacy Plan meeting tonight at Jefferson Community Center. Attached is a brochure that explains importance of the plan and tees up some questions that will help direct future funding.

At Parks we’re nearing the end of two consecutive levies, primarily for capital projects, that have expanded our park system. We’re at a crossroads. We’ve created the first draft of a Parks Legacy Plan that will take us into the future. This is the time when the public can have the greatest impact in shaping the future of Seattle Parks and Recreation.

The draft includes information on our city’s changing demographics, our current budget and basic services, what people think about our current parks system based on a series of recent surveys, national and regional trends in recreation, and information on costs, attendance and community benefit. It poses policy questions we’re asking the public to answer at the six meetings and/or by email.

The Plan can be found here along with important timeline information.

Here is additional information posted on the Mayor’s Blog Post.
