Beacon Bits: Annoying litter, stolen cars, hot dogs and brunch

We haven’t done a Beacon Bits in a while, so here goes. This time we got a few emails from folks that we want to pass on to you. First, Jeff writes:

“Down here in S. Seattle, we have been having a litter problem. The Seattle Times has an advertising paper that they deliver by contracting it out. The delivery folks just toss it out of a moving car to every home that does not get the Times. This creates an unsightly mess, as well as advertising when people are out of town.

“I have contacted the Times multiple times, to no avail. They insist it is their right to litter our neighborhood! I know of several other neighborhoods adversely affected by this issue as well. I started an on-line petition. Can you please post it to your Blog and ask folks to both sign it, and disseminate it through emails or social media such as Facebook? This is an issue all Seattle neighborhoods should be concerned about and can work together on. Here is the link to the petition.

“My partner and I recently bought a house down on S. Juneau & Beacon Ave. about 2 months ago now. Sunday morning, around about 3am-8am, someone stole our car from our driveway.”

Frank writes:

“I would like everyone to know that I have started my new business on Beacon Hill and I want to thank the people who supported me ‘Frank’s Hot Dogs’ on Saturday, my first day of business. I put the cart, on the South/East corner lot of the El Centro de la Raza, east of the taco trailer or right next to it. For my first day it was fun, even though it rained the whole time I was open, I still enjoyed being there. I want to let everyone know, that I wanted to be open Monday through Friday, 11:00 to at least 5:00, possibly Saturday and closed on Sunday. Because the restaurant, El Quetzal where I do my clean up, is closed on Mondays, I will now be open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 to at least 5:00. Then, at 9:00 pm, on Saturday nights, I will be on Beacon Ave. at El Quetzal until after the bars close.”

Melissa writes:

“Would you be willing to mention Tippe & Drague’s Sunday brunch in the blog? We offer it from 9:30am – 1:30pm.”

Neighbors clean up litter for Earth Day

Neighbor Sergey Smirnov wrote this recently on the Beacon Hill mailing list:

This past Sunday, in honor of Earth Day, we organized a litter clean up in North Beacon Hill. Twelve neighbors gathered together to make the neighborhood a cleaner place for all and collected over 60 pounds of trash. We focused our efforts on the area around the Beacon Hill Playground, gathering trash from South 12th, 13th and 14th Avenues from South Massachusetts to South Hill and the adjacent alleys. Plus — we all had a blast! We hope to make this a quarterly clean up — let me know if you would like to join us next time!

Valentine’s Day street clean-up follow-up

Pat McGannon wrote to follow-up on the outcome of the Valentine’s Day clean-up effort between Alaska and Dawson near MLK yesterday (emphasis added):

The weather could not have been much better for the 17 volunteers that participated in the Valentine’s Day neighborhood cleanup that covered Mt. View, S. Edumunds, 30th Ave S., S. Ferdinand Street stairs, and Dawson St. in Mid-Beacon-Hill’s eastern edge. Temperatures climbed into the 50s and the sky held back its rain. Mother Nature even thanked volunteers with an occasional sunbeam breaking through the clouds.

Volunteers worked from 10:30am through 4:30pm to collect over 50 bags of garbage, one large bin of recyclables plus 7 car tires, 6 bikes, 3 children’s big wheels, 3 CRT computer monitors, 3 computers, 2 printers, a microwave, 5 buckets, and 2 lawn chairs that had been thoughtlessly dumped on this neighborhood’s streets. Seven hypodermic needles were also removed from the streets. Additionally, contents of a stolen purse were recovered.

Thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make this Seattle neighborhood a much cleaner and safer place to live! A thank you also goes out to Seattle Public Utilities for supplying the garbage bags, safety vests, work gloves, grabber tools, and post-event trash pickup! Please continue to keep the neighborhood clean by picking up litter on the street near your home each week on garbage day. The neighborhood looks great today thanks to all the volunteers!

If you’re interested in organizing your own street clean-up, Pat also mentioned that you can get free supplies through Seattle Public Utilities.

Clean and Green, Help Wanted

Help clean up Beacon Avenue today at noon

Today at noon, “Team Java Love,” one of two local Beacon Avenue litter-pickup teams, will be picking up litter on Beacon between Java Love and the Beacon Hill Library. Anyone who would like to pitch in is welcome. Please bring gardening or latex gloves if you have them. We are told that when you check in at Java Love, they may have yellow litter bags and highly fashionable safety vests to use. The job could take 30 minutes to an hour or more, depending on how many helpers are there.
