The YMCA of Greater Seattle will offer open computer lab time at Asa Mercer Middle School on the first Thursday of the next two months (May 5 and June 2) from 5:30-7 p.m. YMCA technology instructors will be there to answer technology and internet questions and help with online tasks. All community members are welcome to attend. Mercer Middle School is located at 1600 Columbian Way S.

Meet Broadstripe with UPTUN this Thursday
Seattle Broadstripe customers, many of whom are on Beacon Hill, are encouraged to attend the second quarterly meeting between Broadstripe, the City of Seattle Department of Technology, and volunteer community group Upping Technology for Underserved Neighbors (UPTUN) this Thursday, June 24th, from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in the Bank of America Conference Room at Promenade Plaza, 23rd and Jackson.
UPTUN contends that Broadstripe services for customers in their franchise area are priced higher and are of lower quality than those offered by their competitors servicing other neighborhoods. (We imagine this is an opinion held by many neighbors.) UPTUN also describes a few less-direct effects that poor cable and broadband service has on a neighborhood: Tenants don’t want to lease and condo buyers don’t want to purchase when they find out they must use Broadstripe, negatively affecting vacancy rates; telecommuters and home businesses cannot count on Broadstripe to do their work; substandard services provided by the city and Broadstripe reinforce perceptions and stereotypes that the afflicted neighborhoods are of lesser value than others; and poor service through Broadstripe not only discourages families from moving in, but also provides an incentive to leave the neighborhood.
UPTUN’s quarterly meetings are held to ensure the improvements promised in the 2010 Work Plan are completed, and completed on-schedule.

Husky Promise at Cleveland, STEM contract approved
Tomorrow from 1 to 2pm, the University of Washington Husky Promise financial aid program will be at Cleveland High School:

Meet University of Washington students who have excelled in their pursuing their passions at UW. The Seattle School Board approved the $800,000 contract for the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program starting at Cleveland this fall. From the Seattle Times:
Under the new boundary plan, Cleveland will no longer be a neighborhood high school. Instead, it will be an “option” school, one which students must sign up to attend and with spaces assigned by lottery if necessary.
The STEM program will be phased in, starting with freshmen and sophomores this coming fall.

Community invited to learn about new STEM program at Cleveland High School
SEATTLE – Seattle Public Schools is committed to providing an excellent education so all students graduate from high school ready for college, careers and life. To help meet this goal, a new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program is being implemented beginning fall 2010 at Cleveland High School. Cleveland has been designated an option school – providing high school students from across Seattle access to this innovative program.
The community is invited to attend two events to learn more about STEM and its implementation.
A meeting will be held December 5 at Cleveland High School. Students, staff, and families of current and prospective students are welcome to attend. The meeting will include a presentation, opportunity to ask questions, and a small group discussion to include:
- the vision for the STEM program at Cleveland;
- the goals and benefits of STEM;
- course offerings and program structure;
- next steps for the STEM program and how to get involved; and
- how to determine if STEM is a good option for your student.
Cleveland High School will also hold an Open House and Recruiting Fair on January 23, 2010, where staff can answer questions about the STEM program.
