According to the Seattle School District website, school will start two hours late today, and buses will be on snow routes. No Head Start, preschool, half-day kindergarten, morning breakfast service, or door-to-door service. Full day kindergarten will have a two-hour delay.

Seattle Schools opening on time two hours late
Most of the schools in the area are on a delayed schedule today, but as of 1:00 am, Seattle School District has not announced any schedule changes. Check http://www.schoolreport.org/ to see if that has changed by later this morning; closure/delay reports should always be posted there.
Update: As of morning, Seattle schools are running two hours late.
Snow, seen through your neighbors’ eyes
I know we’ve been a little photo-heavy today, but it’s not every day — or even every year — that we get snow. Here are a few pictures by your neighbors, as posted to the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr. (If you have any interesting photos, please add them!)

Thanks everyone for sharing your photos!
Holiday lights: 16th Avenue South
Holiday lights look so much prettier in the snow, don’t they? Here’s a cute little bungalow blanketed in snow and lights, on 16th Avenue South near the library. (Know of more? Email us. If you’ve taken photos you want us to feature, email them, or add them to the Beacon Hill Blog photo pool on Flickr.

Here’s a map of all the houses we’ve posted about so far (now marked with little green trees). Scroll or zoom out on the map to see the other houses:
Snowy smile on the Hill

How did your snowy Sunday go? We are getting sick, so it was less fun than I would have liked, but we did manage to get this picture of a very cheerful snowman just before it got dark outside.
We had to drive to Walgreens to get a prescription, which reminded me of how nice it would be if we had a drugstore up here on top of the hill. The arterials weren’t bad when we were out, but I can see how frustrating it would have been if we were iced in.

Is this your dog? (Update — owner found!)

Levecke Mas writes,
“I just picked up a stray dog running in the falling snow on 19th ave so b’ween S.Forest and S. McClellan.
“Asked 3 different house if they knew the dog…nope.
“He is unaltered, young male. Super friendly.
 “No collar.Â
“I will deliver and need to see that this dog belongs to claimant.”
If this is your dog, please email leveckemas@yahoo.com. Thanks!
It’s getting cold out there
The National Weather Service is telling us to expect snow showers, but right now the streets are clear and dry. I’ll believe the snow forecast when I see the flakes falling. If you see any interesting weather over the next couple of days, why not post to our weather discussion in the Forum?
More holiday lights: 11th Avenue South
As recommended earlier by a commenter named Steve, we visited the 4500 block of 11th Avenue South and found this cheerful house with a rotating Christmas tree! It’s hard to get a good picture because there are trees in front of the house, but we did our best. Know of other houses for us to look at? Email us or post in the comments here.
As before, here’s a map. You can scroll around or zoom the map to see all of the houses we’ve featured so far:
Beacon Bits: Change, history, sadness, and hope
- Just north of Beacon Hill, the Yesler Terrace low-income housing project is set for big changes. Dominic Holden reports that the Seattle Housing Authority has released plans to build a denser mixed-income Terrace, with buildings from six to 60 stories, increasing the number of units from 561 to between 3,000 and 5,000 while theoretically maintaining the presence of low-income units, as in the NewHolly redevelopment. (We note that tall buildings on that site would have some of the best views in Seattle.) Office space and retail space would be included, as would up to eight acres of park space. It won’t be finished too soon, though; breaking ground is planned for 2011, but the project won’t be completed until 2026. The Google image here shows a bit of what the current site looks like — Slog

- In a terribly sad story of neglect, Seattle Police officers found an 83-year-old woman covered in maggots and lying in her own filth in a house on the 4900 block of 26th Avenue South on December 6. (There are even more horrific details at the Slog post. You have been warned.) The woman’s daughter showed up later with a bag of adult diapers to tell the cops that she lives at the house with her mother. The mother was taken to Harborview and the police are investigating the case — Slog
