Hazelnut Trail volunteers needed this Saturday

It may be wintery weather, but the work parties continue at Beacon-area parks and green spaces. The Friends of Cheasty Greenspace need 40 volunteers this Saturday, December 3 from 10 a.m. to 12 noon to complete the Hazelnut Trail, then drink hot cider and eat homemade baked goods around a warm fire pit. Yum!

The Friends will provide tools and gloves, but volunteers should wear warm clothing and sturdy shoes, and bring their own water bottles. If you like, bring extra refreshments to share. Meet at 2809 South Alaska Place at 10 a.m.

Caspar Babypants to play at Wellspring Open House Saturday

Wellspring Family Services, just a bit east of Beacon Hill on Rainier Avenue, is holding a free Holiday Open House this Saturday, December 3. The event will feature a special performance by Caspar Babypants (otherwise known as Chris Ballew from The Presidents of the United States of America). Caspar will be debuting a brand-new song written about the winner of this summer’s Kids Helping Kids coin drive contest.

The event runs from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at Wellspring, 1900 Rainier Ave. S. Caspar Babypants performs live at 1 p.m., and there will also be holiday treats and tours of the facility.

Admission is free for all ages, however, you are encouraged to bring a new, unwrapped toy to donate to the Wellspring Holiday Toy Room. The Toy Room is a place where homeless families may come and choose gifts for their children. Wellspring expects to share gifts with over 1,000 children in this year’s Toy Room.

Create art chairs with painter Fulgencio Lazo

ROCKiT space is hosting a work party on Saturday, November 5 as part of a continuing project to decorate art chairs for community events. The “Have a Seat, Beacon” project, which began earlier this year, will create 45 chairs that are also individual works of art. This free workshop with Oaxacan and Seattle-based painter and print-maker Fulgencio Lazo will provide participants with the opportunity to transform a plain metal folding chair into a painted art chair.

Lazo, who resides on Beacon Hill with his family, will share his technique and aesthetic approach at the workshop, as well as painting two chairs himself. His work has been exhibited extensively in Mexico, Japan and the United States. Sue Peters of the Seattle Weekly wrote about him in 2005: “There’s a simplicity and joy to Fulgencio Lazo’s work that’s refreshing. His oil paintings evoke Paul Klee and Marc Chagall in their vividly whimsical celebration of family, heritage, and community in his native Oaxaca.”

Space is limited, so the free workshop is open to the public by reservation. No experience is necessary, and the workshop is bilingual. For more information or to reserve a spot in the workshop, contact Sheba Burney-Jones at shebabj@gmail.com or 206-669-4574.

ROCKiT space, Beacon Hill’s home-grown music and arts organization, is launching a Community Art Chair project at their upcoming Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 22. The project converts 40 metal folding chairs, donated to ROCKiT by Peace Action, into a fleet of art chairs to be used at ROCKiT events and loaned to community groups for other public events. A prototype was painted by artist Kathleen McHugh and displayed at Beacon Rocks! during the summer.

The chairs are in need of some TLC before they can be decorated. Two volunteer work parties are scheduled to wash and prime them before the Harvest Fair. Join friends of ROCKiT on Sunday, October 2 from 2-5 p.m. to clean the chairs, and Saturday, October 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to prime them. Everyone is welcome! Snacks, supplies and camaraderie will be provided. Drop by 5919 Shaffer Avenue S. in Seattle to lend a hand. For further information, write shebabj@gmail.com or call 206-669-4574.

Mark your calendar for the ROCKiT Harvest Fair on Saturday, October 22, from 2 – 9 p.m., at the Garden House on Beacon Hill (2336 15th Ave. S.) for creative family fun featuring music and activities that reflect the Beacon Hill community. For more information, visit the ROCKiT space website.

Rizal Park work party this Sunday

Craig Thompson sent this note to the BAN list. Potential volunteers take note:

This Saturday, August 13, a group of us who’ve worked to create a positive place around the orchard at Dr. Jose Rizal Park are going to have a work party, nothing too big, just some trail cleanup down to the orchard so this September, groups from Fred Hutchinson and Seattle Pacific University can access the site safely and effectively.

All tools will be provided, and we’re going to meet up 10 AM and go to 1 PM. We’ll cut back and haul up to the top a bit of brush – some of which is already down. It may be sunny, but long sleeves, long pants, and good shoes are what you’ll need to wear.

The Rizal Park orchard project was recently mentioned in a post in the Ear to the Ground blog from the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

Dr. Jose Rizal Park is located at 1008 12th Avenue South.

Graffiti-fighting program starts today

Today is the first day of a new city program, “Summer Paint Out,” providing neighbors with free paint, rollers, scrapers, and gloves to paint over unwanted neighborhood graffiti. Supplies may be picked up at 3633 East Marginal Way S. from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on July 2, 16, 30, and August 6 and 20, however, pre-registration is required.

(Thanks very much to the Rainier Valley Post for drawing our attention to this!)

EarthCorps work party at Rizal Park 5/14

Craig Thompson forwarded an announcement about a volunteer opportunity helping EarthCorps to improve Dr. Jose Rizal Park this Saturday, May 14. Volunteers are welcome to come at 10 a.m., and the work party will probably run until 2 p.m.

Craig also described last weekend’s efforts in the park:

“Last weekend, 35 Rainier Scholars and staff, Mountains to Sound Greenway volunteers and organizers, and a few neighbors came out in the sun to work on the orchard area at the park and an overlapping forested area. Blackberries were cut back, and the few remaining trees with ivy in the lower off-leash area were cleared with survival rings. Some basic pruning of the crab apples removed some problem branches. We opened up visibility into the area from the access road beneath, having cleared an area down to the stand of Leyland cypresses.

“We removed about three bags of trash, plus a small collection of empty bottles/cans of alcoholic beverages (about half of which are barred from the Alcohol Impact Area down the hill).

“The true apples in the orchard are beginning to blossom, so there is a good possibility that they may produce fruit this year. Please consider joining in this weekend.”
