Potluck, music, and more at Garden House tonight

Tonight, July 19, the folks from ROCKiT space are bringing three events to the Garden House on 15th Ave. S.

From 3:30-6 p.m. is the Hi-Chair Happy Hour, a BYOB-B (Bring Your Own Baby and Beverage) social for new parents and their little ones. The Happy Hour is held every third Tuesday. The suggested donation is $5.

Afterward, from 6-7 p.m., there is a free community potluck, followed by a family music night from 7-9. The music event is “pay what you will,” and all neighbors are welcome. Bring instruments, hum or sing along, or just enjoy the music.

The event will also feature supervised kids’ games on the lawn until dark.

The Garden House is located at 2336 15th Ave. S.

Would late hours benefit Beacon eateries?

Would you visit Victrola if it was open later? Photo by Wendi.
Recently, neighbors on the mailing list have discussed the hours of local restaurants such as El Quetzal which close early, and whether they would gain more business with later hours. Jake London put a survey together to get some harder numbers about how people feel about this.

The survey discusses El Quetzal, Victrola, and Kusina Filipina, and asks whether later closing times would increase the likelihood that each survey taker would patronize these businesses in the evening hours.

The survey has only three questions, so it’s short and quick. You can take it here.

Jake says the survey will be open for a week or so. Stay tuned for the results.

Piñata Party Saturday promises music, food, fun

(Correction: We have been told that Lushy is not performing at this year’s event after all. — Ed.)

Music, food, piñatas, and other neighborly fun activities are coming to Stevens Place Park on Beacon Avenue this Saturday for the annual Beacon Hill Piñata Party. The party is free, and all neighbors are invited.

Performers at the event will include Suntonio Bandanaz, La Banda Gazona, and Lushy. There will also be a community potluck, and, of course, piñatas for the kids.

The party is Saturday, July 16, from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Stevens Place Park (often called Triangle Park), located on Beacon Ave. S. between S. Forest St. and S. Stevens St.

Here’s a video of part of Lushy’s performance at last year’s Piñata Party:

Food Forest design party #2 on Wednesday

This is the site that will become the Beacon Food Forest. Photo courtesy of Friends of the Beacon Food Forest.
The Friends of the Beacon Food Forest invite all interested neighbors to the second of three community design parties for the Beacon Food Forest. The event is this Wednesday, July 13, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., at El Centro de la Raza. Guests will be able to view and comment on three design options for the Food Forest, presented by the Harrison Design Group. Food and drinks will be provided.

The Food Forest project will be located in a seven acre site along the west side of Jefferson Park, and will include edible perennial plants. Jacqueline Cramer of the Friends of the Beacon Food Forest describes the Forest this way: “Imagine a forest. Now substitute all these plants with fruit and nut trees, berry shrubs, fruiting vines, herbs, edible flowers, and vegetables. Now you’re thinking food forest.”

El Centro de la Raza is located at 2524 16th Ave. S. The design party will be held in the dining hall, on the lower level at the north end of the building.

BHIS seeks tile artist for mural project

Beacon Hill International School is seeking a “working tile artist who explores global themes and enjoys working with children” for a 6-week project in late summer/early fall of this year, working with K-5 kids to create tiles for a mosaic mural.

The artist chosen will also bring the Beacon Hill community into the project, collaborating with neighbors to make tiles and complete the mural.

The installation will be an approximately 10’x7′ tile mosaic, to be installed on the wall of an exterior entryway. Additionally, some smaller areas at the school and a nearby park may also be included in the project. The stipend for the completed mural is $2,000. The application deadline is July 29.

Details and further information are below the jump:

Have you seen this dog?

(11:30 pm, 7/6: The dog has been found! Thanks, everyone, for your help!)

Neighbor Owen sent us the following plea:

Please help me find my lost dog. He is 20 lbs, white, with some gray accents on his ears. He can be fairly skittish around people especially men. He has a fresh haircut and looks kind of like a beagle mix. He is roughly 5 years old and fixed. His collar is a combination chain and nylon with a Seattle pet license attached. He never leaves the house but was scared off by the 4th of July fireworks. He disappeared sometime between 8p and 12a. Any tips or information on his whereabouts would be appreciated. A reward is offered for any information leading to his recovery.
