THURSDAY 3/4 (today):

North Beacon Hill Council meeting, 7:00 pm at the Beacon Hill Library (2821 Beacon Avenue South), with folks from the Findlay Street Church in attendance to talk about the development at 14th and Bayview, proposed City of Seattle development guidelines with the Department of Planning and Development, Parks Opportunity Fund info, 12th Avenue/City Light meeting details, Beacon Arts Council and Merchants Association info, and more.

FRIDAY 3/5:

City Year Breakfast Of Champions, 7:30 to 9am. Meet current members and staff, learn how to join, and have breakfast!
Green Eggs and Ham, a movie, and crafts for kids at 6pm at the Jefferson Community Center, 3801 Beacon Ave S.

SATURDAY 3/6:

Blaine Memorial sukiyaki dinner, 4 to 7pm (or 2 to 7pm for take-out), at 3001 24th Ave S.
Container veggie gardening classes from Seattle Tilth from 1-2pm at Jefferson Community Center, 3801 Beacon Ave S. Classes are $60, require advance registration, and run each Saturday from 3/6 through 3/27.

MONDAY 3/8:

Technology Matching Fund grant applications due by 5pm. Last chance this spring to apply for matching grants of volunteer labor, materials, professional services, or cash through the TMF program.
The Mayor’s Youth and Family Initiative community meeting, 7:00 pm at Van Asselt, 8311 Beacon Ave S, with former mayor Norm Rice, Estela Ortega of El Centro, and deputy mayor Bob Watt.

THURSDAY 3/11:

Parks board meeting, 7:00 pm at the Jefferson Community Center, 3801 Beacon Ave S, focusing on the Parks and Green Spaces Levy and a Planning and Development Division update.

SATURDAY 3/27:

Solid Ground Bowl-a-thon at West Seattle Bowl, 4505 39th Ave SW, benefiting Beacon Avenue and El Centro de la Raza food banks.
Sodo Grocery Outlet grand opening with prizes and events from 8am to 6pm at 1702 4th Ave S. (There’s also a ribbon cutting ceremony — with refreshments! — the day before at 11:30am.)

Beacon Bits: Grocery stores, town halls, and a song

The Grocery Outlet just off Rainier Avenue, next to the Mount Baker train station, didn’t survive long enough to see the station open. It closed last year, its business hampered by ongoing station construction right in front of its parking lot.

Fans of Grocery Outlet shopping will soon have another nearby option, however, with a new store opening in the former state liquor store site on Fourth Avenue South in SoDo. The new site is not as convenient to pedestrians as the old one, however; the nearest Link station, instead of being right next door, is about a half-mile walk around a huge block and part of the Metro bus base.

Mayor-elect McGinn is hosting three town halls this week to hear your thoughts and ideas about the future of the city. Two of the town halls are reasonably close to us here on Beacon Hill.

Rainier Grocery Outlet to close

We stopped in at the Rainier Grocery Outlet this evening and saw that entire rows of shelving were gone, the freezers were half-full, and a lot less “stuff” was in the store. I asked the checker if they were closing or just remodeling. He said they’re closing November 26th.

We haven’t been able to get more details yet, but we’re wondering if the store is a casualty of the lengthy construction of the Mount Baker light rail station that has made access to the store more difficult for the last few years. The building and property are owned by the University of Washington, with their laundry facilities next door.

Some time between March 31st, 2007 and June 19th of this year, Steve Christman took over from Steve and Debbi Mullen, operators of the Madrona Grocery Outlet. The Mullens stated in 2007 that, while the store had taken a 20 to 30 percent hit in business due to light rail construction, they hoped to tough it out until the rail station opened, running the Rainier store at “zero profit” until then and “didn’t want the store to close.” Looks like that plan didn’t pan out.

If your bargain-hunting regularly brings you to Grocery Outlet, you might want to get down there soon.
