Seattle City Light is in the process of testing various types of LED streetlamps in pilot neighborhoods, seeking to bring more reliable, more efficient, and longer-lasting lighting to your street.

Follow the progress of City Light’s LED testing program online. West Seattle Blog has a bit more. This program has been a long time coming. Capitol Hill Seattle talked about it almost a year ago.

At 6pm on Friday, March 5th, the Jefferson Community Center will be celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday with a movie, crafts for kids, and actual green eggs and ham! Bring your appetite. The community center is located at 3801 Beacon Avenue South.

Not a novelty color, but the next evening, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church is again hosting its annual Sukiyaki Dinner, benefiting homeless women and children. Dining hours start at 4pm and end at 7. Take out hours run from 2 to 7pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 11 and under. Blaine Memorial is located at 3001 24th Avenue South.

Late addition: Jefferson Community Center hosts the 3rd annual Black History Month Community Forum. Organized by the local chapter of Blacks in Government, the theme is “surviving and thriving in a down economy”. City Council members Bruce Harrell and Sally Clark, Langston Hughes Executive Director Royal Alley-Barnes, and Kitsap County Auditor Walt Washington are on the list to speak. It runs from 6:30 to 8:30pm tomorrow night (Thursday) at 3801 Beacon Avenue South. — Via Publicola

Benefit concert and Bookfest coming soon

Looking for something to do this weekend and next? All-ages events are scheduled nearby in Rainier Valley each of the next two weekends: one to raise money to help those in need, and one to celebrate the printed word.

Local dance crew Massive Monkees and hip-hop group Blue Scholars will share a stage for the first time again in a benefit show on Sunday, Massive Relief, to raise money for victims of the recent tropical storm Ketsana. The benefit, featuring a b-boy/b-girl (break dance) workshop, food, conversation, live music and more, is open to all ages, and will be held at 2:00 pm October 18 at the Filipino Community Center, 5740 Martin Luther King Jr. Way South. Later that evening there is a 21+ after-party benefit concert, at 8:00 pm at The Crocodile, 2200 Second Avenue in Belltown. (via the P-I’s Big Blog)

The following weekend, Columbia City will be the place for local booklovers to be, with the arrival of the 2009 Seattle Bookfest. The Bookfest will be held on October 24 and 25, from 10:00 am until 6:00 pm at the Columbia City Event Center, the former Columbia School building at 3528 South Ferdinand Street. This is only a block away from Columbia City Station, and also a block away from Rainier Avenue and “downtown” Columbia City. The event will include activities for the whole family, many authors and speakers on three author stages, and lots of local publishers, bookstores, and others displaying their wares.

Shred it at the Shred-a-thon, help a local food bank

Vivian Valencia, Regional Relationship Manager at Verity Credit Union down by the VA Hospital at 1660 S. Columbian Way wrote to let us know about an event coming up this weekend:

Identity theft is on the rise which means shredding sensitive documentation is critical. This Saturday, June 13th, 10am – 2pm, Verity Credit Union’s VA Hospital/Beacon Hill branch is sponsoring a community shred-a-thon. Everyone is welcome. A minimum $5 donation is requested. Recital to benefit St. George School May 29

Marissa Ramos, music teacher at Beacon Hill’s St. George Parish School, will play a benefit concert for St. George on May 29th at 7:00 pm in the church. Friends and fellow UW, USC, Yale and University of Arizona alumni will join her in a show featuring two grand pianos and dueling pianists, and a repertoire that includes Mozart, Brahms, Joplin and more.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children. Call the school at (206) 762-0656 to reserve tickets.

Sukiyaki Dinner March 7 at Blaine Memorial

Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church is having their annual benefit Sukiyaki Dinner on Saturday, March 7, and all are welcome! Dining hours are 4:00 – 7:00 pm, and tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children. Takeout is also available earlier in the day; details are on the event flyer. Rumor has it there will also be a bake sale, so there will be no shortage of tasty edibles, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Beacon Avenue Food Bank and the El Centro De La Raza Food Bank. Blaine Memorial is located at 3001 24th Avenue South.
