Save the date: Benefit Playground skatedot meeting, 9/1

Seattle Parks and Recreation is hosting a follow-up public meeting to discuss the design of a skatedot (a skateboard facility) at Benefit Playground. The meeting is a follow-up from input received in the August 11 design meeting, and will take place on September 1 from 6 – 7 p.m. at the park picnic shelter. Benefit Playground is located on South Beacon Hill at 9320 38th Ave S.

According to Parks and Recreation:

A skatedot is a skateboard feature within an existing park that can range in size from 1,500 to 10,000 square feet. It is considered a neighborhood facility that can accommodate up to 13 users at a time. This skatedot is expected to be located within the existing sport court area of the park. Meeting tonight to discuss Juvenile Justice Center proposal

Craig Thompson sent the following notice:

“A neighbor asked me to send this message out reminding people that there’s an informal meeting of concerned neighbors at Dr. Jose Rizal Park tonight at 6 PM to discuss the proposed move of the Juvenile Justice Center to the PacMed building.

“We’ll meet in the amphitheatre. You can also barbecue at the park….”

Curtis Bonney adds: “There’s no agenda, just a discussion.”

“No Jail at PacMed” groups organizing

Neighbor Hans writes:

For anyone who supports “No Jail at PacMed” we’ve organized a neighborhood discussion that’ll take place at my home on Sunday at 4:00. Several people with postings on this blog plan to attend. I live 2 blocks south of the building, on 14th Ave S. If you would like to attend, please send me an email and I’ll provide the address.

Neighbors have also set up a Facebook page to help organize against the Wright Runstad proposal, which would move the King County juvenile court and detention facility to the landmark PacMed building on North Beacon Hill.

Rep. Pettigrew to host telephone town hall

Rep. Eric Pettigrew (D-37).
37th District Representative Eric Pettigrew is hosting a telephone town hall next Tuesday, July 26 from 6 to 7 p.m, and all 37th District neighbors are welcome to join in.

A telephone town hall is an opportunity to bring up questions, comments, and concerns about the 37th District and the state Legislature. Many residents of the 37th District will receive a call that evening inviting them to stay on the line and join the conversation. If you do not receive the call directly by 6:10 p.m., you may also participate by dialing 877-229-8493, and using the PIN code 15226.

Food Forest design party #2 on Wednesday

The Friends of the Beacon Food Forest invite all interested neighbors to the second of three community design parties for the Beacon Food Forest. The event is this Wednesday, July 13, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., at El Centro de la Raza. Guests will be able to view and comment on three design options for the Food Forest, presented by the Harrison Design Group. Food and drinks will be provided.

The Food Forest project will be located in a seven acre site along the west side of Jefferson Park, and will include edible perennial plants. Jacqueline Cramer of the Friends of the Beacon Food Forest describes the Forest this way: “Imagine a forest. Now substitute all these plants with fruit and nut trees, berry shrubs, fruiting vines, herbs, edible flowers, and vegetables. Now you’re thinking food forest.”

El Centro de la Raza is located at 2524 16th Ave. S. The design party will be held in the dining hall, on the lower level at the north end of the building.

NBHC needs your input on meeting days

The North Beacon Hill Council is considering changing the day the group meets each month. To ensure maximum involvement from members of the community at Council meetings, they have created an opinion survey to find the best possible meeting day. The survey will be open for public response through the middle of July. Please fill out the survey if you have any interest in attending Council meetings.

Currently, the Council holds its public meetings on the the first Thursday of the month. However, due to some room availability conflicts this fall at the Library, they are considering a change. Another factor involved is that there have been requests from some board members and neighbors that the meeting be moved so that it does not conflict with the monthly “Art Walk” in Pioneer Square.

North Beacon Hill Council meetings are open to the public and feature official speakers from the City on issues such as land use, public safety and parks. Additionally, there are regular reports from the many subcommittees and other community organizations such as Beacon Bikes, the Merchants’ Association, and El Centro de la Raza. Beacon Hill neighbors and business owners are encouraged and welcome to attend all meetings, and voting membership is granted after attending two meetings.

Input wanted on new directions for Community Centers

Seattle Parks and Recreation has been challenged by the City Council to re-think the way community centers should operate in this time of budget difficulties.

A citizen advisory team has worked for a while on developing new ideas for the operation of the centers, and now Parks would like to hear from residents in the wider community at two meetings, one at Bitter Lake in the far North End, and the other right here on Beacon Hill.

All are welcome to attend. The Bitter Lake meeting is on Wednesday, June 15, 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Bitter Lake Community Center, 13035 Linden Ave. N. The Beacon Hill meeting is the next day, Thursday, June 16, 7 – 8:30 p.m., at Jefferson Community Center, 3801 Beacon Ave. S.

A draft of the options that have been proposed so far will be available tomorrow, June 8, at all community centers and on the Seattle Parks and Recreation website. There will also be an online survey posted on the same website starting June 8 which you may fill out if you’re unable to attend the community meetings.

Neighbors invited to Food Forest design party 6/7

The first Beacon Food Forest community design party is this coming Tuesday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the Garden House, 2336 15th Ave. S.

Neighbors are invited to participate in the design process for the Beacon Food Forest (previously known as the Jefferson Park Food Forest). This is the first of three design parties hosted by the Harrison Design Team. Dinner will be provided.

The Beacon Food Forest is a planned “edible urban forest garden” on a 7-acre grassy field on the western slope of Jefferson Park. The Food Forest project received a $22,000 grant in December 2010 to create a schematic design. Tuesday’s design party is part of this design process. Future design parties are planned for July 13 and sometime in September.
