The community is invited to “honor the ancient ones” at El Centro de la Raza’s DÃa de los Muertos Opening Night tonight, November 1, from 5:00 – 8:30 p.m. at El Centro, 2524 16th Ave. S. Admission, dinner, and parking are all free.
Tonight’s event will include dinner served from 5:30 to 7, and the ofrenda (memorial) exhibit from 5 until 8:30. Ofrendas in the exhibit were made by groups including Ameyaltonal Danza Azteca, From Hiroshima to Hope, Infant Mortality Prevention Network, Las Poetas del Monton, Youth in Focus, and more.
The ofrenda exhibit will be open through November 15, from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on weekdays, except for Thursdays, when the hours will be 12 noon to 8 p.m.
El Centro is hosting other DÃa de los Muertos events this month. On Thursday, November 8 from 6 – 7:30 p.m., there is a two-part work shop on “The Symbolism and History of La Calavera ‘Catrina'” by Araceli Jaime, and “Analysis of the Aztec and Mayan Calendars” by Esmael Lopez. The following Thursday, November 15, poet Raúl Sánchez will read in English and Spanish from his debut book, All Our Brown-Skinned Angels.

The Green Seattle Day organizers want you to know that volunteers are still needed to help out at another local park, John C. Little Park on South Beacon Hill, on Saturday, November 3. (We previously mentioned a work party at the Cheasty Greenspace.)
Volunteers will help remove invasive species, and plant native trees, shrubs, and ground cover.
The work party will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Volunteers should meet at the tool chest located behind the town homes along Holly Park Dr S. This area is located above the children’s playground in the upper part of John C. Little park. To reach the work area, follow the signs that lead up to the alley way behind the townhomes. The tool chest can be found under the large tree located halfway up the alley.
Please dress appropriately for weather conditions, and bring snacks and a filled water bottle.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Port of Seattle meeting originally scheduled for October 23 at New Holly has been rescheduled for Tuesday, November 13, from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at Cleveland High School, 5511 15th Ave. S. on Beacon Hill.
The FAA, Port, and Boeing Field representatives are holding the meeting, they say, to “provide information on existing flight procedures into and out of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and Boeing Field.”
Members of the Quieter Skies Task Force, a group of Beacon Hill and other Southeast Seattle neighbors, plan to be at the meeting in force, bringing concerns about recent and planned future airplane noise over our neighborhoods, and a petition signed by more than 300 neighbors. See our earlier post about the meeting.
The Cheasty Greenspace/Mt. View is a host site for the upcoming Green Seattle Day on Saturday, November 3. Neighbors and friends of the Greenspace are invited to participate in this special volunteer event.
According to the Friends of Cheasty Greenspace,
“We have over 800 native plants, shrubs and trees that need to be planted to transform the Angeline Entrance, our gateway into the park. We will also be completing the Columbian Way Link; if you like robust trail building work, this is for you!”
Volunteers should meet at 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning at 2809 S. Alaska Place, one block west of the Columbia City Link station. The work party will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with a noon break for lunch. Tools and gloves are provided; please bring your own lunch, water, and a snack for the community snack table.

We haven’t done a Beacon Bits in a while, so here goes. This time we got a few emails from folks that we want to pass on to you. First, Jeff writes:
“Down here in S. Seattle, we have been having a litter problem. The Seattle Times has an advertising paper that they deliver by contracting it out. The delivery folks just toss it out of a moving car to every home that does not get the Times. This creates an unsightly mess, as well as advertising when people are out of town.
“I have contacted the Times multiple times, to no avail. They insist it is their right to litter our neighborhood! I know of several other neighborhoods adversely affected by this issue as well. I started an on-line petition. Can you please post it to your Blog and ask folks to both sign it, and disseminate it through emails or social media such as Facebook? This is an issue all Seattle neighborhoods should be concerned about and can work together on. Here is the link to the petition.

“I would like everyone to know that I have started my new business on Beacon Hill and I want to thank the people who supported me ‘Frank’s Hot Dogs’ on Saturday, my first day of business. I put the cart, on the South/East corner lot of the El Centro de la Raza, east of the taco trailer or right next to it. For my first day it was fun, even though it rained the whole time I was open, I still enjoyed being there. I want to let everyone know, that I wanted to be open Monday through Friday, 11:00 to at least 5:00, possibly Saturday and closed on Sunday. Because the restaurant, El Quetzal where I do my clean up, is closed on Mondays, I will now be open Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 to at least 5:00. Then, at 9:00 pm, on Saturday nights, I will be on Beacon Ave. at El Quetzal until after the bars close.”
