Neighbors Nathan and Miranda sent us this plea to help find their orange kitty Chutney:
We lost our cat, Chutney who is a very friendly, large orange indoor cat. He’s a large, orange classic tabby with a white chest and paws and has a loud, low meooow and a loud purr. Since he’s an indoor only cat, he may be scared. He’s microchipped but doesn’t have a collar. If you see any orange cat you don’t recognize, please hold him and call us at 206-335-7812 and 206-335-8139. We live on 22nd & McClellan/Lander, so he’s probably in that vicinity. Neighbor Heather tells us that Coco, the unofficial “12th Avenue Viewpoint park greeter” cat, is missing. Coco was last seen on Sunday, May 1, at 6 p.m. at 12th Ave. S. and S. Stevens.
“Things to know: female, social, black and white long haired, green eyes, and has one pupil that is bigger than the other and probably with some bushes or branches attached to her tail. She is EXTREMELY friendly and has a home. Please call me if you have seen her.

The new crosswalk on Beacon Avenue in front of the library is now complete and functional. When pedestrians pass between the sensors on either side of the street, flashing lights activate in the crosswalk to alert drivers.
The lights do not seem terribly bright; they are invisible during bright daylight and even in the evening, not as bright as we expected. But they should help make evening and nighttime pedestrians a bit more safe at that intersection.

Camp Fire groups are forming in the area, with activities for boys and girls aged 3 to Grade 12. Groups can be all boys, all girls or boys and girls together. As the City Council works to balance the city’s 2011-2012 budget, they are seeking input from residents to develop a budget that best reflects the needs of the city. To do this, the Council is inviting everyone to participate in this year’s budget process in one of the following ways:
Attend one of three public hearings. The dates and locations are listed here. Unfortunately, none of the meetings are in Southeast Seattle, but there is one in West Seattle at SCCC, and one at Seattle City Hall.

The Beacon Hill P-Patch needs volunteers on October 2 for a clean-up work party. Volunteers will weed and aid in brush removal in the upper slope of the P-Patch, and afterward gather for food, drinks, and socializing.
Nearly 800 freshmen and transfer students at Seattle Pacific University will be volunteering on Beacon Hill on Saturday, September 25 as part of SPU’s “CityQuest” program. From 10:30 am until 2:30 pm, SPU student and staff volunteers will be working on an orchard and a public garden at Dr. Jose Rizal Park, helping Operation Nightwatch with a community clean-up, and clearing out invasive plants at Lewis Park.

Because of an all-staff meeting, all locations of the Seattle Public Library will open late on Thursday, September 30. All library locations will open at 1:00 pm that day.

If your dog isn’t where he or she is supposed to be right now, you might want to call neighbor Wynona, who tells us she found a “well-cared-for dog” yesterday crossing Beacon Avenue South near South Orcas Street. The dog does not have a collar or an identification chip. If you think the dog might be yours, call Wynona at 206-930-0934 and describe the dog to claim it.

All South Precinct residents are invited to this free community event, which will be held from 1:00 – 4:00 pm in the South Precinct parking lot, 3001 South Myrtle Street.

Nearby in the South Beacon Hill area, Seattle Parks and Recreation will host a meeting for the Othello Playground Safety and Lighting Improvement project on Monday, September 20 from 7:00 – 8:30 pm at the Van Asselt Community Center, 2820 South Myrtle Street.
At this meeting, the design team will present schematic designs for the project, based on information gathered at the first meeting in May and at the August Othello Park International Music and Art Festival.
The Beacon Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library will host a special story time for children on Saturday, October 2 at 3:30 pm featuring an actor in costume as the television character Kai-lan from Ni Hao, Kai-lan. The story time is free and registration is not required. Kai-lan will read from one of her Mandarin Chinese/English bilingual books, and giveaways and photo opportunities will be available. The story time is presented in partnership with the Seattle Theatre Group in promotion of the upcoming stage show Storytime Live! at the Paramount Theatre.

You still have time to submit an application with the Seattle Releaf “Trees for Neighborhoods” program. The application deadline has been extended to October 4 for the program, in which participants receive free trees, training, and some supplies to get started caring for their trees. Another way to help green-up your neighborhood is coming on October 10, with a Maple School Natural Area Invasive Species Removal and Native Planting work party. The work party is from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, followed by a social party until 6:00 pm. All you need to bring is yourself—refreshments, tools, and gloves will be provided.
“On my way to the train this morning around 7:45 on 22nd & Lander I spotted a large, black, senior Labrador mix anxiously walking around with a brown/orange/black tabby cat following close by. The two were obviously together. I followed them to College but the dog was scared. I couldn’t get close and I didn’t want to chase them down to Rainier. I managed to get a photo of the dog, the cat was behind the car. It’s attached. Hopefully one of the BHB readers will recognize them so they can go home.”
I hope this animal pair finds its way home. Perhaps they are on an incredible journey.
This sweet kitty, Simon, is lost on Beacon Hill.A large black tabby cat named Simon is lost, and his family misses him. Simon is five years old, and has no tags or microchip. He was last seen on Christmas Eve at 13th Avenue South and South Angeline Street. He is very friendly, but shy with strangers. He has a squeaky meow.

We have scheduled our first organizing meeting for Tuesday January 5 at 7:00 pm. Thanks to Jessie and Marti the meeting will be at ROCKiT space (3315 Beacon Avenue South). This is the first meeting so we will be starting with the basics: what are we trying to do? How will we do it? Anyone interested in the idea of a music series at the new Beacon Hill Festival Street is invited to attend.”

Speaking of ROCKiT space, we are told they are now holding an open mic every Saturday night from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. Jessie says, “This is a very casual sort of thing, open to all, and we welcome any art form you’d like to share.” As mentioned above, they are at 3315 Beacon Avenue South.

Has anyone taken in a rather large tabby cat the past week, or slipped him some food? Don’t have a pic at the moment, but he is a grey/black/dark colored male tabby, on the larger side. He’s an inside/outside cat who often catches his own food and isn’t tagged because he’s a master at losing his collar. Â He hasn’t been around for about a week. Â His name is Simon. He lives near Maple Park in the south part of Beacon Hill, on the corner of 13th Ave S and Angeline. His family was on vacation over Christmas and the house-sitters rarely saw him…. 500.00 reward for finding our lost cat
Sophie is a 7 year old spayed gray and white fluffy cat with greenish-yellow eyes. She was last seen around 7pm on September 25th, 2009 and was wearing a bright pink collar with silver sparkles on it and a small pink bell attached. She enjoys hiding out in garages and would likely be a little skittish unless hungry. We miss her terribly and need to have her back home with us — she’s a true member of our family.
