In 2009 over 1,500 people helped plan the future of their neighborhoods in North Beacon, North Rainier and Othello. Now it’s time to get things done. Come help prioritize next steps and sign up for project action teams.
Also, if you’re not already familiar with the neighborhood planning situation, you’re welcome to arrive early; a special orientation will be given at 5:00 pm.
Don’t forget about the Beacon Hill Music/Beacon Rocks! fundraisers and Beacon Idol tryouts, along with numerous other still-upcoming events, mentioned in the last roundup!
The Bartell Drug Store at Rainier Avenue South and South College Street has applied for a new “Grocery Store – Beer/Wine” liquor license. If you wish to comment on the application, you can email your comments about license number 406481 to customerservice@liq.wa.gov.
Maple Elementary School is working on a mural project. Students, parents, and community members of all races will work together to create a mural for the school gym exterior that reflects the significance of The Maple Creed: “I know that our country was built by people of all races and I know that people of all races keep our country great.”
Community tile creation and tile glazing sessions will be held on the following Mondays from 3:30 – 8:30 pm: May 3, 10, 17, 24; June 7, 14. There will also be sessions on the following Saturdays from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm: May 1, 22.

Last week, Cienna Madrid at the Stranger wrote about the new Streets for All Seattle Coalition, a group fighting to fund projects for bicycle, transit, and pedestrian improvements. In the article, SASC spokesman David Hiller specifically discusses how a transportation crisis in South Seattle has drawn organizations such as El Centro de la Raza into the coalition.

The Seattle City Council and Mayor will host a joint public meeting about the City’s budget here on Beacon Hill at the New Holly Gathering Hall, tomorrow, April 28, at 5:00 pm. The New Holly Gathering Hall is located at 7054 32nd Avenue South.
Neighborhood Matching Fund Small and Simple Award winners have been announced by the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods. Projects for Beacon Hill that received matching funds:
Beacon Hill Family Bike and Pedestrian Circulation Planning – $15,000 in matching funds
Lewis Park Reforestation Phase II – $17,000
Cinco de Mayo Festival – $7,125

Joelle Hammerstad with Seattle Parks and Recreation wrote in to share that Van Asselt Community Center is closed this afternoon:
They had a sewage back up from one of the toilets, which caused a pretty big mess. Our plumbers are there and working to resolve the problem. We expect to get cleaning folks in later today, and open the facility for normal operating hours tomorrow. All classes and programs have been cancelled today.
We advise folks to call tomorrow before going to the center just to be on the safe side. The number is: 206-386-1921.
The city says: if you have a Thursday pickup, put your garbage out as normal. If you got skipped today (Wednesday), put it out again next Wednesday. The city has a PDF map of affected areas and more at seattle.gov.

The Seattle Department of Neighborhoods is looking for places to add new P-Patches, particularly in North Beacon Hill; your suggested locations are welcomed — Rainier Valley Post
One fenced lot adjacent to the light rail station has recently sprouted a “for rent” sign. This lot next to the rail station would be a plum spot for some lucky lunch truck, obviously — but what other purposes could such an available space be put to?
Speaking of street vendors, Dylan wrote to the mailing list recently:
Taqueria Latinos II has been parked at the corner of Weller and 12th (just on the other side of the Jose Rizal bridge) for about 4 months now. For those of you who have been lucky enough to swing by, we have enjoyed their generous servings of authentic south of the border cuisine. One of the best taco trucks in Seattle, they use fresh ingredients and are nice folks — can’t beat that. On April 23rd they are moving to 2537 15th Ave S, right behind the Bank of America.

Update: According to the SPD, this appears to have been a single-vehicle rollover accident, possibly with alcohol as a factor. It was called in at about 8:05pm Friday and both police and the fire department responded. The vehicle knocked down a red light post and a bus stop sign before colliding with the City Light pole on the corner of 15th and Beacon. Upon arriving, the vehicle was found upside-down with the driver inside. The driver was safely removed and taken to the hospital for examination and a blood draw. There were no passengers and apparently no other injuries or vehicles directly damaged. SPD’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad’s investigation is still underway.
A car accident occurred around 8:30pm tonight near the intersection of 15th and Beacon Ave S. Beacon was closed off between Lander and 15th.
