- Remember when T-Mobile applied last year to install three panel antennas on the roof of the Jefferson Park Apartments at the corner of South Spokane Street and Beacon Avenue South? The antennas are planned to be located “within a faux brick chimney shroud assembly… extending approximately 10 feet above the roof top.” The installation has been conditionally approved.

Students march for peace and justice this Friday
Join Giddens School students and others for a Central Area STUDENT MARCH FOR PEACE & JUSTICE in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Friday, January 16th, 10 a.m. – noon. What would Dr. King say to President Obama?
“Rosa Parks sat so Martin Luther King could walk. Martin Luther King walked so Obama could run. Obama’s running so we all can fly.” -rapper, Jay-Z
March from Judkins Park to the Northwest African American Museum. Rally there at 11 with the Honorable Harold Moss, former Tacoma Mayor and civil rights activist, student speakers from Giddens and Garfield High, and songs led by musical director Kent Stevenson. Giddens students organized the march, reaching out to neighboring Central Area schools and others to join them. A number of schools – Lake Washington Girls Middle, Zion Prep, First Place, Seattle Girls School, Leschi Elementary, and King Street Coop – are on board or have expressed interest in attending. The march commemorates the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and is a reminder that the struggle for peace and justice is never-ending as long as war, poverty, and other inequities exist in the world. Theft ring busted — go get yer stuff!
The Seattle P-I, may they live forever, reports that Seattle police broke up a large theft ring recently, and now they want to reunite a lot of theft victims with their stuff.
The ring used burglaries, car prowls, and car thefts to acquire their ill-gotten goods. Most of the Seattle crimes occurred in the North and West Precincts, but the police say that anyone who reported a theft or burglary before December 11 should drop in to their local precinct to view photos of the recovered items. For us, that’s the South Precinct at 3001 South Myrtle Street. You can also call 206-684-4381 and leave your name, case number and a description of the stolen item.

Beacon Bits: Local volunteering, local food, and local cake!
- The Rainier Valley Post tells us that Rainier Avenue institution Borracchini’s has added a 21st century shine to an 86-year-old business — now you can order cakes online!
- Sara suggests that we mention that there are tons of local volunteer opportunities for the National Day of Service on January 19; find some here.
- Sustainable South Seattle (S3) will meet at the Columbia City Library this Wednesday, January 14, from 6:00 – 8:00 pm, where Seattle City Councilmember Richard Conlin will discuss the Local Food Action Initiative.
Metro service change proposals updated
Here are some of the notable changes:
- Route 36 will extend all routes to the Othello Link station using new trolley wire that will be installed on South Myrtle Street and South Othello Street; south of Othello, 36 will be replaced by 106.
- Route 60 will run every 20 minutes during peak periods, and extend weekend trips from Georgetown to White Center starting in 2010.
- New Route 50 will run from Othello Link Station to West Seattle via the Columbia City Link Station and SODO!
- Route 38 will run from Mount Baker to the Beacon Hill Link Station, where people will now transfer to light rail to get to SODO.
There are other changes as well, and you can complete an online questionnaire to give Metro your feedback, or visit one of the open houses we listed on January 1.
Two additional open houses have been scheduled as well:

Tell the mayor what you really think
A lot of Seattleites have some, um, strong opinions about the way things went in this city during our recent “snow event.” If you’re one of them, Mayor Nickels wants to talk to you! The mayor is inviting city residents to talk about their winter storm experiences with him, and with department heads and city staff, as part of a citywide performance review of emergency snow operations.
Three meetings are planned, but none in Southeast Seattle; one’s in the Central District, though, so it’s not too far away:
- Tuesday, Jan. 13, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Green Lake Community Center, 7201 East Green Lake Drive North
- Wednesday, Jan. 14, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Garfield Community Center, 2323 East Cherry Street
- Thursday, Jan. 15, 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Southwest Community Center, 2801 Southwest Thistle Street
At the meetings, we’re told you’ll be able to talk one-on-one with the mayor, and also meet with staff from transportation, utilities and other departments.
Beacon Hill International School wins $20,000 award
Beacon Hill International School has been awarded the 2008 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom “MVP Award.†Chief Sealth High School in West Seattle was also honored. Each of the schools will receive $20,000 to be used for a particular program. In Beacon Hill’s case, it is a community literacy program, “tailored to the unique multicultural needs of the school’s students and families.” Funds will be used to buy language materials, and events such as Family Literacy Nights are planned to help empower parents to take part in their children’s development of literacy and their academic growth and success.
Lane closure tomorrow on Jose Rizal Bridge
SDOT will close the southbound right lane on the Jose Rizal (12th Avenue) Bridge from 9 a.m. to 3 pm tomorrow, January 9, to pour a new concrete sidewalk on the northwest corner of the bridge. Plan accordingly.
