An addition has been made to the agenda for Tuesday night’s North Beacon Hill Council meeting. Rosemary Aragon, Executive Director of the Pacific Hospital Preservation and Development Authority (PDA), will be on hand to discuss the recent termination of Wright Runstad’s lease on the historic PacMed Center building, and talk about the PDA’s history and mission: to remove gaps in healthcare access.
As the Seattle Times reported recently, Wright Runstad lost their 99-year lease 85 years early after they missed a $380,000 quarterly lease payment in June, and then were unable to meet a deadline last week to pay the back rent.
The council meeting will start at 7 p.m. at the Beacon Hill Library, 2821 Beacon Ave. S.

The North Beacon Hill Council meets tonight (September 11) at 7 p.m. at the Beacon Hill Library, 2821 Beacon Ave. S. While there are several topics on the agenda including updates on public safety and Internet connectivity, one topic expected to draw a crowd is that of airplane noise and the Greener Skies project to adjust flight patterns into SeaTac, and what sort of impact the project may have on the residents of Southeast Seattle.
There has been a fair amount of worry on Beacon Hill about the potential changes. The materials produced by the FAA to explain the project are somewhat opaque to non-pilots, and conflicting information on whether it will negatively affect the Hill at all has come in from various sources. Community meetings to discuss the plans have been located in Ballard and Federal Way, but none of them near Southeast Seattle.
Some neighbors were able to attend the meeting in Ballard, and will report back at tonight’s NBHC meeting. West Seattle Blog recorded video of the meeting. The Ballard News-Tribune was also there. According to neighbor Tina Ray, part of tonight’s plan is to set a date and agenda to meet with the Port of Seattle and the FAA about the Greener Skies plan.
Here’s the complete agenda for the evening:
7:00-7:05 Introductions
7:05-7:20 Public Safety Update: Reports about an increase in street burglaries and updates on recent shootings in the Beacon Hill area

8:15-8:30 Update on Internet connectivity in Beacon Hill: Representatives from UPTUN (Upping Technology for Underserved Neighbors) will be presenting with invited representatives from Comcast, Wave (formerly Broadstripe) and CenturyLink
As always, all interested neighbors are welcome to attend.

The locals were a bit restless at last night’s North Beacon Hill Council meeting. The agenda included presentations about the new Jefferson Park Golf Clubhouse plan and about the development planned for the southeast corner of the Beacon Hill Station block, and both projects seemed to raise some hackles.
The Golf Clubhouse caused the most ruckus. Susanne Rockwell of Seattle Parks and Recreation was there to present the plan, and started off the evening on a defensive note, introducing the plan by saying Jefferson Park “is not an Olmsted park,” and emphasizing that the improved views from the clubhouse would provide “more eyes on the street” — as well as views to the golf course on the other side of Beacon Avenue. One neighbor asked if the new views of downtown would only be enjoyed by those at the driving range, and Rockwell answered that passers-by on Beacon Avenue would be able to enjoy them too.
The plan presented seemed to be the same as the one previously discussed here, where you can find a link to presentation materials. Rockwell answered some general questions about the project, and mentioned that the likelihood of an addition of new parking parallel to Beacon Avenue, though it is in the plan, is “slim.” This brought applause from one member of the audience.
After this the tone of the meeting grew tense. Several members of the audience challenged Rockwell’s assertion that Jefferson park is not an Olmsted park. Rockwell replied “There was not an Olmsted plan for the park.” There was disagreement and shaking of heads in the room. One neighbor commented that the planned building is not attractive: “If the clubhouse was being replaced by something really beautiful, it would be an enhancement… [those drawings] look pretty crummy to me.” Later in the meeting, after Rockwell left, neighbor Roger Pence called the planned structure “a strip mall turned on its side.” Continue reading Clubhouse, station block development both cause controversy→
The Jefferson Park Golf Clubhouse and the new development planned for the southeast corner of the Beacon Hill Station block — both topics of a fair amount of neighborhood interest — are on the agenda for the next North Beacon Hill Council meeting Tuesday, April 3 at 7 p.m. at the Beacon Hill Library community room.
Here’s the agenda:

The Oak, the new restaurant/bar to open on Beacon Avenue, is among several topics to be discussed at the next meeting of the North Beacon Hill Council on Tuesday March 6, 7 p.m. at the Beacon Hill Library.
