New coffee shop The Station opens

The Station, a new coffee shop, opened yesterday at 2533 16th Avenue South, just across from El Centro de la Raza and just north of Beacon Hill Station. The opening was celebrated with barbecue and a live DJ. The shop is small but comfortable, and is currently displaying paintings by Vanessa K. Wilken on the walls. Along with coffee, tea, and chocolate, The Station will also be carrying pastries from A Touch of Sweden.

Pizzeria planned on North Beacon Hill

Next year, it looks like you’ll finally be able to get pizza on Beacon Hill. Jerry Corso and Gina Tolentino have signed a lease to open Bar del Corso on North Beacon Hill in early 2011. The Bar del Corso blog says:

“While we can’t say the exact address, we can say that it is in the Beacon Hill neighborhood. Take our word for it, the location is great, and very accessible—the pizzeria would be right on a bus line and just a couple blocks from the Light Rail station. Plus there will be lots of on-street, unmetered parking.”

According to the blog, the restaurant will be “a 48-seat pizzeria and wine bar with traditional Italian fare,” featuring a wood-burning pizza oven and regional Italian wines. There will be counter and table seating, as well as outdoor seating during the summer. Dinner will be served Tuesday through Saturday.

Corso and Tolentino are seeking investors to help raise the last 1/3 of the funds needed to open the restaurant, and holding fundraising events. For more information, see the blog or contact them at info@bardelcorso.com.

Beer returns to the old Rainier brewery

If you’ve lived on North Beacon Hill for more than a decade, you may recall the smell of brewing beer that used to waft over the Hill every day from the Rainier Brewery next to the freeway on Airport Way South. The brewery closed 10 years ago, but brewing is returning to the historic old brewery building this summer in the form of the Emerald City Beer Company. Washington Beer Blog reports that Emerald City will have a brewery and tasting room/“beer lab,” and they are hoping to have their first batch of beer ready next month. Their flagship brew will be “Dottie’s Seattle Lager,” quite suitable for a building that that produced a lot of lager over the years. See more details at the Washington Beer Blog.

A Touch of Sweden promises pastries on Saturday

A Touch of Sweden is coming to Beacon Hill this weekend, bringing Scandinavian cakes and pastries to the Beaconian masses, as well as new life to a building that has been closed to the public for the last year. This new baking business will be catering and selling baked goods to order, including Swedish pastries such as cinnamon rolls, chocolate/almond beskvis, farmers’ cookies, dream cookies, and princess cakes.

Kajsa Soderlund and PopTop Rising are hosting an opening event this Saturday, May 1, to introduce their selection of baked goods. Sampling tickets will be available and everything will be at a reduced, introductory price. There will be Mother’s Day cakes, raspberry mousse cake, and chocolate mousse cake, as well as free coffee. Soderlund says, “We will be taking orders for Mother’s Day cakes or other requests too.”

The event will take place on May 1 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at the former Culinary Communion house, 2524 Beacon Avenue South.

“A Touch of Sweden” is renting kitchen space from the new tenant of the house, so it won’t be a full-time bakery just yet. However, Soderlund tells us that they plan to have open hours when people can stop by to place advance orders, though the hours aren’t yet finalized.

The kitchen will be busy; we hear that there may be a new restaurant opening in the Culinary Communion building soon. We’ll post more details about the restaurant as we get them.

In the meantime, Soderlund says “We are very happy to be able to bake at this beautiful kitchen and would love to see you there.”

Lot for rent and, elsewhere, a new taco truck

One fenced lot adjacent to the light rail station has recently sprouted a “for rent” sign. This lot next to the rail station would be a plum spot for some lucky lunch truck, obviously — but what other purposes could such an available space be put to?

Speaking of street vendors, Dylan wrote to the mailing list recently:

Taqueria Latinos II has been parked at the corner of Weller and 12th (just on the other side of the Jose Rizal bridge) for about 4 months now. For those of you who have been lucky enough to swing by, we have enjoyed their generous servings of authentic south of the border cuisine. One of the best taco trucks in Seattle, they use fresh ingredients and are nice folks — can’t beat that. On April 23rd they are moving to 2537 15th Ave S, right behind the Bank of America.

Tamales for sale at El Centro

Elliott Jones at El Centro de la Raza sends an update that will be good news to tamale fans:

I’ve sent messages recently advertising El Centro de la Raza’s tamale-making classes (by the way, there are still a few spots open for our April 24th class [note the date change]), but I don’t know whether I alerted the local community to the fact that we are selling tamales as well!

Unfortunately, the first tamale class is this Saturday, meaning if you wanted to purchase some of the tamales that our tamalera and her students will be making, they are $12/dozen and you must order by tomorrow at 5pm. You need to pay with your order (we can accept payment over the phone with our new credit card machine).

If you have any questions or would like to order fresh, locally-made tamales, and support your local non-profit community organization at the same time, please call Ashley Haugen at 206-957-4611 or via e-mail at development@elcentrodelaraza.org. The tamales can be picked up Saturday afternoon after the class at El Centro de la Raza or any time during the following week.

The Beacon Pub in Seattle Beer News

Geoff Kaiser, Beacon Hill neighbor and Seattle Times news-partner-in-law at Seattle Beer News, drops by the Beacon Pub and likes what he finds:

…when a few friends and I finally decided to stop in and check it out this past weekend, I was ecstatic to find that they actually have several taps of good beer! Upon walking in I first noticed a couple of taps from Three Skulls Ales, then a tap from Snoqualmie. At that point, I said to a friend, “Wow, I wasn’t expecting them to have much of anything interesting to drink. This rocks.”

Beacon Bits: Green Eggs, Helladope, LED streetlights, and sukiyaki

Seattle City Light is in the process of testing various types of LED streetlamps in pilot neighborhoods, seeking to bring more reliable, more efficient, and longer-lasting lighting to your street.

Follow the progress of City Light’s LED testing program online. West Seattle Blog has a bit more. This program has been a long time coming. Capitol Hill Seattle talked about it almost a year ago.

At 6pm on Friday, March 5th, the Jefferson Community Center will be celebrating Dr. Seuss‘s birthday with a movie, crafts for kids, and actual green eggs and ham! Bring your appetite. The community center is located at 3801 Beacon Avenue South.

Not a novelty color, but the next evening, Blaine Memorial United Methodist Church is again hosting its annual Sukiyaki Dinner, benefiting homeless women and children. Dining hours start at 4pm and end at 7. Take out hours run from 2 to 7pm. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for children 11 and under. Blaine Memorial is located at 3001 24th Avenue South.

Late addition: Jefferson Community Center hosts the 3rd annual Black History Month Community Forum. Organized by the local chapter of Blacks in Government, the theme is “surviving and thriving in a down economy”. City Council members Bruce Harrell and Sally Clark, Langston Hughes Executive Director Royal Alley-Barnes, and Kitsap County Auditor Walt Washington are on the list to speak. It runs from 6:30 to 8:30pm tomorrow night (Thursday) at 3801 Beacon Avenue South. — Via Publicola

Gardening gets going

Glenn Herlihy issued a call for all interested in attending a Jefferson Park Community Garden and Food Forest meeting (in the Gardening forum and via David Gackenbach):

Good news… is all we got now.

The Parks Department has sent us a letter to go ahead and apply for the second round of applications for the Levy Opportunity Fund.
The application is due April 2nd and we’re going to do it. This has potential to build a lot of our Garden and is a great exercise for all who want understand public fund raising.

The VA Hospital has contacted us and is interested in some P-Patch or garden space for garden therapy. We can help with that.

We now have interested people from the community, Parks Department, Asa Mercer school, VA hospital, Mara Farms, Permaculture groups in the Seattle area and few others I may have missed. On top of that I just learned one of my good friends is good friends with Mr. MacPherson of MacPherson’s Produce. Maybe they would like some local fruit in a few years.

This next meeting will focus on:

  • the Levy Fund application,
  • finding a name for the garden,
  • welcoming the VA Hospital,
  • what to do with the 16th Ave dirt road and other design elements.
  • outreach possibilities
  • review

Please spread the word. All are welcome to attend.
If you have anything interesting flowering in your garden and want to share it with us please bring it.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 2nd at 7pm at the Lawn Bowling Club House (4103 Beacon Avenue South).

It’s springtime, and the garden is happening again. For those of you who know of, or have visited “The Garden,” and you know where I mean, this “e.” is for you.

Come and enjoy the beauty of the season as much as you like, but I do ask:

  • Please don’t pick the flowers or dig up plants. If you take them, no-one else can then enjoy them.
  • If you have a dog to walk, fine — but please keep your pet on the road, not in the garden, and pick up your messes.
  • Someone has been throwing their doggy doo doo bags into the woods. There is a trash can down at the overview park at 12th and McClellan.
  • Thanks, and cheers to a great early spring.

Going out and about?

Good news! Sound Transit has announced Link light rail will be running until about 1:30am on New Year’s Eve. Update: From the Seattle Times by way of the Seattle Transit Blog, the additional train runs will be departing Westlake, southbound, at 12:44am, 12:54am, 1:09am, 1:24am and 1:39am.

Staying on the Hill?

Good news! The Beacon Pub is celebrating the New Year all weekend long. They’ll have a DJ on NYE, and will be hosting their world-famous karaoke Friday and Saturday nights. On New Year’s Day, they’re opening early: 10am for both food and drink, and featuring drink specials all weekend long.
